TSA Rolls Back 'Gateside' Guest-Pass Program; Norfolk Airport Removed from the List

Norfolk International Airport (ORF) confirmed to USA Today on Oct. 17 that it is no longer part of the Transportation Security Administration's “Gateside” program. Announced in September, the program allowed nonticketed members of PreCheck and other trusted-traveler programs to pass through security to accompany loved ones to the gate or greet arriving passengers — a partial return to pre-9/11 rules. Airport spokesperson Chris Jones said ORF joined the program on Oct. 2 and saw travelers use it right away, but only learned it had been removed on the morning of Oct. 13, when people wrote in saying they could not apply; he was unsure when it actually ceased. Gateside had reportedly expanded to hundreds of airports before being sharply scaled back; as of Oct. 17, the program's website listed only the original 13 airports. TSA said in a statement that it is conducting an operational assessment at the 13 airports, evaluating participation levels and operational impact, and did not address the expansion or rollback.
