Statewide 'March for a Moratorium' on Data Centers crosses Virginia, Ends October 24 in Richmond

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · States · GSM News

RICHMOND — A relay march calling for a statewide pause on new data-center construction is making its way across Virginia. The 'March for a Moratorium,' organized by Appalachian Voices and partners, began in Alexandria on October 10, stopped in Winchester on the 15th and Leesburg on the 17th, and reached Culpeper at 1 p.m. on the 18th. It continues to Danville (19th), Virginia Beach (20th) and Roanoke (21st) before concluding in the capital, Richmond, at 11 a.m. on October 24.

Organizers say data centers are pressuring Virginia's water supplies and air quality while driving up electric bills, and they want state leaders to establish safeguards for communities before approving more projects. (GSM, based on Appalachian Voices and ALXnow reports)
