Gene Juarez Workers Stage 'Sick-Out' Over New Commission Plan; Appointments Canceled Across Western Washington

More than 60 non-union employees of Gene Juarez, the Washington-based salon and spa chain, called in sick on Friday, Oct. 17, in an organized “sick-out” that forced appointment cancellations at locations across western Washington, Fox 13 Seattle reported. The workers were protesting a proposed new commission plan that they say could cut their pay by up to 10%. Beverly Lawrence, an employee of more than six years who spoke for the group, called the commission changes an unfair blow: “This is cutting corners as far as what we can offer to our clients, so this is the last straw for us, taking money out of our pockets.” She said a 10% cut could force her to choose between paying rent, caring for her pets and supporting herself. Because the salon staff has no union representation, workers decided a sick-out was the most effective way to voice their opposition. Lawrence said employees hope to negotiate a solution with management in good faith, and thanked affected clients for their understanding. Gene Juarez opened its first salon in Seattle in 1971.
