West Virginia Beats Cincinnati 45-42 on a Walk-Off Field Goal for a Homecoming Win

West Virginia beat Cincinnati 45-42 on Oct. 17 at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown in a Homecoming shootout that produced more than 1,200 combined yards of offense. Jack Cassidy's 35-yard field goal as time expired — West Virginia's only lead of the game — completed the comeback. Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. threw for 464 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more, including a 12-yard scoring run that tied the game 7-7 in the second quarter. “I trusted Jack, and he nailed it,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said.
The game also featured a disturbing scene: Cincinnati defensive tackle Josh Hough injured his left leg in the second quarter, and as he was being carted off, the medical cart backed his injured foot into a wall beside the field, apparently aggravating the injury — a moment the TNT broadcast noted as well. Hough was ruled out for the rest of the game. West Virginia improved to 4-3; Cincinnati fell to 4-2.
