Taiwan Dollar Falls More Than NT$0.2 in Monday Morning Trade to a 1.5-Year Low

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

The Taiwan dollar weakened by more than NT$0.20 on Monday morning, touching NT$32.545 against the U.S. dollar, its lowest in about a year and a half, Reuters reported on Oct. 19. The slide came as global jitters over the artificial-intelligence trade weighed on Asian currencies and equities, with foreign investors repatriating funds while exporters held back; Taiwan's benchmark stock index fell about 1.65 percent the same day. Traders said near-term moves would hinge on foreign flows, U.S. inflation data and central bank policy signals. Bloomberg separately quoted analysts as saying the weakness was driven mainly by global risk aversion, while Taiwan's economic fundamentals — including exports and the semiconductor industry — remain resilient, leaving room for the currency to recover toward year-end. Taiwan's central bank maintains that the exchange rate is determined by market supply and demand, intervening only when volatility becomes excessive; it made no special announcement on Monday's move.
