Taiwan's NSTC Opens Applications for Second Five-Year Quantum Programme, 2027-2031, Emphasising International Collaboration

Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has opened applications for its second five-year quantum technology programme, running from 2027 to 2031, with a focus on international collaboration, mastery of key technologies and industrial application. Quantum computing, communications and sensing are regarded as next-generation critical technologies, with governments worldwide racing to invest. During the first five-year programme, the NSTC brought together Academia Sinica, the Industrial Technology Research Institute and university teams to build quantum computing research platforms and photonics laboratories. The council said the second phase will encourage joint research with leading international laboratories and draw Taiwan's semiconductor and precision-manufacturing supply chains into quantum component development, leveraging the island's chipmaking strengths. Academics say the long-term, stable funding is essential at this early stage of the technology. Application eligibility, funding levels and review schedules are set out on the NSTC website.
