October 18 is the Double Ninth Festival, and county and city governments across Taiwan are in the middle of paying out their annual Chongyang senior bonuses, with all six special municipalities running payment schemes.

In Taipei, residents aged 65 to 84 receive NT$1,500, while those aged 99 and above receive NT$10,000 plus a gift; most payments go out by bank transfer, with an in-person cash window from October 15 to 17. New Taipei pays NT$20,000 to centenarians, with cash collection starting October 17, and Taoyuan pays the same NT$20,000 amount to residents aged 99 and above. In Yilan County's Nan'ao Township, additional local top-ups can bring a centenarian's total to NT$50,000.

Known in Taiwan as Senior Citizens' Day, the festival sees social welfare departments publish eligibility, amounts and collection methods each year, with amounts rising by age band and centenarians at the top.

Beyond the cash gifts, local governments schedule senior activities around the festival, and departments advise recipients to watch for deposit notices or borough office announcements.
