Nordic Prime Ministers Urge EU to Preserve Carbon Market Rules

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

COPENHAGEN — The prime ministers of Denmark, Finland and Sweden have written jointly to the European institutions urging that the rules of the EU Emissions Trading System, the bloc's carbon market, be preserved. In their joint letter dated October 14, the three leaders said any weakening of the ETS would undermine the predictability of investment decisions and shift the burden of emissions reductions to other sectors of the economy.

The letter came as EU leaders discussed the carbon market at a summit in Brussels on October 15-16. The ETS is the EU's central climate policy tool, pricing carbon emissions from industry and power generation through a cap-and-trade system, and member states are divided over whether its rules should be adjusted.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is one of the signatories. The Nordic countries have long advocated strict climate rules, and the joint pre-summit stance is a clear signal against proposals to loosen the carbon market. (GSM, based on the official statement reported by MLex)
