Ireland to Offer Cash to Encourage Ukrainians to Leave, Migration Minister Says

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

DUBLIN — The Irish government is aiming to terminate government-provided accommodation for Ukrainian migrants within a year, while offering "generous" payouts to encourage their repatriation, Minister of State for Migration Colm Brophy has said. In an interview with The Times published on Saturday, Brophy said discussions were underway within the government with a view to ending state-provided accommodation over the next 12 months; the termination has yet to be finalised at government level, he clarified, adding that "the timeline is the critical thing here."

Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, around 125,000 Ukrainians have received temporary protection in Ireland, according to Brophy. Between July 2022 and March 2026, Dublin spent more than 438 million euros ($516 million) providing housing for about half of them, and has also provided nearly 400 million euros in political, humanitarian, economic and non-lethal military aid for Kyiv.

"I don't see why we as taxpayers should be paying out millions and millions and millions... because no other EU state is providing that," Brophy said. Ireland is one of the few EU states still providing state accommodation to Ukrainians. (GSM, based on The Times interview)
