Phillies Hire Carlos Mendoza as Third-Base Coach; Mattingly Joins Staff
Philadelphia is a city in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (a consolidated city-county). The Philadelphia Phillies confirmed on Oct. 15 that they have hired former New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as third-base coach; he will also serve as infield coach. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski confirmed the appointment the same day. Former third-base coach Dusty Wathan moves to first base, and Mendoza takes over the infield duties of Bobby Dickerson, who was dismissed.
Mendoza, who managed the Mets, drew interest from the Seattle Mariners this fall before choosing Philadelphia. Don Mattingly, the former Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins manager, signed a two-year deal with the Phillies last week to serve as bench coach. The coaching-staff overhaul is Philadelphia's first step in regrouping after its National League Division Series exit. (GSM, via Reuters and MLB Trade Rumors)
