Trump Marks National Forest Products Week: U.S. Timber Sales Top 3 Billion Board Feet, Highest in Nearly Three Decades

WASHINGTON — The White House issued a presidential message on October 19 marking National Forest Products Week. In the message, President Trump said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service (USDA Forest Service) has sold over three billion board feet of American timber this year, the highest volume sold in almost three decades, and has achieved 116 percent of its annual reforestation goal, the highest level in twenty-six years.

The message said Trump last year signed two executive orders to increase domestic timber supply and reduce reliance on imports. According to the message, over half a billion dollars in new domestic industry investments have since been announced, and annual industry earnings have increased by over $5,600. It also cited the administration's rollback of environmental regulations on industries such as logging and paper manufacturing, and the Make America Beautiful Again Commission, which brings together administration officials to lead active forest management and conservation efforts.

From the evergreens of the Pacific Northwest to the hardwood ridges of Appalachia, America's forests are among the nation's greatest natural treasures, the message said, adding that the logging, forestry, manufacturing, and construction industries sustain households and communities across the country. The week, Trump said, is a time to refocus on responsibly utilizing these resources to grow the economy and preserve the nation's wildlands for future generations.
