Ligue 1: Ten-Man Lyon Beat Nice 2-1 to Top a Five-Way Tie on 14 Points; Monaco Lose 1-0 at Lorient for First Defeat of the Season

Lyon — Olympique Lyonnais came from behind to beat Nice 2-1 at home on Sunday and move top of a tightly packed Ligue 1 table, while previous pace-setters Monaco lost for the first time this season, Reuters reported on October 18.

Elye Wahi opened the scoring for Nice in the 18th minute, but two goals in three minutes turned the game around by half-time: Pavel Sulc equalised by prodding home a rebound, and American midfielder Tanner Tessmann headed the hosts in front. Lyon played the last 20 minutes with 10 men after substitute Keito Nakamura was dismissed for a dangerous studs-up challenge, and survived a late scare when Wahi had an effort ruled out for offside four minutes into stoppage time. Axel Witsel had earlier headed against the bar and Wahi hit the post with a close-range header.

Lyon are one of five teams on 14 points after seven games but lead on goal difference — plus eight, ahead of defending champions Paris St Germain, Paris FC and Lille, all on plus five, and Monaco on plus four. "It's good to be top but it's not the most important thing," said Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca. "But having 14 points is very positive. Of course, that gives us confidence and greater responsibilities, but at this stage of the season it changes nothing." Lyon head to PSG next weekend.

Monaco, the league's last unbeaten side heading into the weekend, suffered their first defeat of the campaign as Noah Cadiou's 61st-minute penalty earned Lorient a 1-0 home victory; wing back Dembo Sylla had been felled by Monaco captain Denis Zakaria, and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky dived the right way but could not keep the spot-kick out. Elsewhere, Paris FC were 4-3 winners over Rennes in a match featuring four penalties — newly capped France international Esteban Lepaul converted a hat-trick of penalties for Rennes but still ended up on the losing side, Lassine Sinayoko struck the decisive penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time, his second goal of the game after Maxime Lopez scored the first two for the Parisians — and Olympique de Marseille recorded a second successive league win with a 5-2 triumph at Angers, lifting them to ninth place with nine points.
