'Street Fighter' Review Roundup: Critics Split From Audiences — 42% From Critics vs. 82% From Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, a B- CinemaScore

"Street Fighter," the Paramount and Legendary adaptation of Capcom's fighting game, opened in North America on October 16, and the first weekend of reviews split sharply. The film is directed by Kitao Sakurai and set in 1993, with Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken and Callina Liang as Chun-Li.
On the negative side, Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter called the movie a "jumbled tonal mess" that is "only sporadically entertaining." The Playlist's review argued that the film swings between deadly serious and parody and barely feels like a complete movie.
On the positive side, Consequence wrote that the film works the way fans would want a big- screen "Street Fighter" to work, and IGN praised it for never letting good sense get in the way of a good time. IndieWire applauded the film for at least never being boring.
The scores underline the divide: as of October 18, on Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 42 percent approval rating from critics against an 82 percent audience score, and audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore. By comparison, the 1994 "Street Fighter" film earned a 20 percent critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. (GSM, from published reviews)
