SPOKANE, Wash. — U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Washington state on October 19 as the 46th stop of her Returning Education to the States Tour, the Education Department said. McMahon toured King's Schools, a private Christian school serving preschool through 12th grade, and the Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame, a private classical high school. She also joined U.S. Representative Michael Baumgartner for a press conference in Spokane calling on Governor Bob Ferguson to opt Washington into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit. According to the department, 31 states have so far opted in to the tax credit, which was delivered by the Working Families Tax Cuts Act and provides families with more affordable education options; individuals can receive a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for donations to approved scholarship-granting organizations. 'It was an honor to join Congressman Baumgartner to encourage Governor Ferguson to opt in to the Education Freedom Tax Credit, and expand education freedom throughout the Evergreen State,' McMahon said. On the tour, she is traveling to all 50 states to hear from teachers, parents and community leaders and to compile a toolkit of best practices for states.
