The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced in Washington on October 19 that its Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has awarded more than $10.5 million in grants to support mine safety and health training and education programs nationwide, aimed at reducing mining accidents, injuries and illnesses. The total award is $10,537,000, according to MSHA News Release 26-1554-NAT.

The grants support the delivery of federally mandated training for new and experienced miners at surface and underground coal mines and metal and nonmetal mines. MSHA is awarding the grants in 45 states, the Navajo Nation and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. States and territories applied for the funding, which goes to state mine inspectors' offices, state departments of labor and state-supported colleges and universities, with training programs tailored locally to the conditions and hazards miners may experience.

Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling said the administration is investing billions of dollars into critical mining projects and resources for mining education, and that the announcement furthers the department's goal to expand mining across the United States. Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Wayne Palmer said the grants will promote safe and healthful workplaces for over 300,000 miners across 47 states, territories and tribal lands.

Among the largest individual awards, the University of Texas at Austin will receive $742,414, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection $563,901, the West Virginia Office of Miners Health Safety & Training $529,576, the Arizona State Mine Inspector's Office $453,633, the Nevada Division of Industrial Relations $428,400 and Minnesota State Colleges & Universities $407,985.
