Battle of Pelham Reenacted at Orchard Beach in the Bronx for Its 250th Anniversary

NEW YORK — New York City is a city in Bronx County, New York. A reenactment marking the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War's Battle of Pelham, also known as the Battle of Pell's Point, was staged on Sunday, October 18, at Orchard Beach in the Bronx, New York City, New York, before a large crowd of spectators.
The reenactment got under way at about 10 a.m.: the tall ship Lynx fired its cannon offshore, red-coated British soldiers boated ashore, and outnumbered Patriot regiments fired muskets to try to repel them across the grassy expanse, with a New York City Parks Department sign and the long boardwalk visible in the background.
The original battle was fought on October 18, 1776, and is believed to have taken place in what is now Pelham Manor, about a mile from the reenactment site; at the time, Westchester County extended farther south and included parts of today's Bronx. Historical accounts describe Colonel John Glover and roughly 800 Continental soldiers delaying nearly 4,000 British and Hessian troops from a series of stone-wall positions.
The stand bought time for George Washington to evade the British and move his army north through Westchester. It followed heavy American losses in Brooklyn and Manhattan, where about 300 Americans had been killed and 800 wounded. (GSM, based on lohud.com)
