Monday, October 19, 2026 · States · GSM News

Juneau, the capital of Alaska, ranked first in WalletHub's 2026 list of the safest cities in America, released on October 19. The study evaluated 182 cities, and Juneau earned 75.89 points out of 100, ahead of Warwick, Rhode Island, at 72.35 and Overland Park, Kansas, at 70.19.

The ranking drew on 41 indicators, including violent crime, traffic fatalities, natural-disaster risk, unemployment and financial stability. Juneau ranked first for natural-disaster safety and fourth for financial safety, recorded the lowest murder rate and the lowest pedestrian fatality rate in the study, and had the second-lowest flood and tornado risk and the seventh-lowest wildfire risk. Its residents ranked ninth for median credit score and 20th for annual employment growth. In the home and community safety category alone, however, Juneau ranked 46th.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the safest cities in America protect residents from bodily harm and property damage while also helping secure their financial safety. Anchorage, the other Alaska city in the study, ranked 88th. (GSM, via WalletHub and Men's Journal)
