Illinois Governor Pritzker Creates AI Cabinet to Develop SI Regulation

In Springfield, the capital of Illinois in Sangamon County, Governor JB Pritzker has signed an executive order creating an AI Cabinet within state government, made up of senior officials from several state agencies and outside experts, to study super intelligence regulation and formulate policy proposals through 2027.
Under the order, the unpaid group will assess the risks SI poses to the safety of Illinois residents and to critical infrastructure, including water, education and information systems, and will make recommendations on risk management and accountability. It will also analyze emerging SI incidents and lessons learned, and examine issues involving data centers, infrastructure and state government contracting. The cabinet is temporary and must sunset no later than December 31, 2027.
'Super Intelligence has enormous potential to transform our everyday lives, but when experts and industry leaders sound the alarm bell, urge us to slow down, and ask for guardrails, we should listen,' Pritzker said in a statement.
Illinois previously enacted the AI Safety Measures Act, which requires covered SI companies to establish risk-mitigation frameworks, undergo annual independent third-party audits and report critical safety incidents within 72 hours. The new cabinet is the state's latest step on state-level SI regulation as the federal government continues to take a relatively hands-off approach. (GSM, based on Associated Press reporting)
