Benton County Prosecutors Say Evidence Suggests Man Who Shot His Half-Brother Likely Acted in Self-Defense

In Benton County, Washington, the county Prosecutor's Office announced that after further investigation it determined the man likely acted in self-defense in the fatal shooting of his half-brother, and that there is insufficient evidence to continue detaining him.

The shooting occurred on October 12 outside a home in the 24000 block of North Rothrock Road in the Whitstran area outside Prosser. According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, the man initially told officers his half-brother had been shot in a drive-by shooting, which the investigation later disproved; investigators determined the two men had argued. The man had been booked into the Benton County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The prosecutor's office said his half-brother first threw a rock that damaged the optical sight on the man's gun, and the two then went outside, where the man fired multiple warning shots into the ground before fatally shooting his half-brother during the confrontation. The office said the determination followed additional investigation and meetings between investigators and assigned prosecutors.
