Vance Leads 'War on Fraud' as Cabinet and Governors Sign Pledge; Treasury Cites $175M Recovered

Monday, October 19, 2026 · White House · GSM News

WASHINGTON — The White House says President Donald J. Trump and Vice President JD Vance are moving aggressively to shut down waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government. As head of the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, Vance this week called on officials at every level of government to sign a pledge to protect vulnerable Americans, keep taxpayer-funded benefits for eligible Americans only, stop fraud before money goes out, and hold fraudsters accountable.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Treasury returned $175 million in payments that would have gone to deceased individuals over the past year, expanded Do Not Pay access to 99% of federal programs, stopped almost $190 million and returned over $100 million sent overseas, and ordered an audit of about $9 billion in Treasury contracts. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said her department has prevented more than $2 billion in student aid fraud; the Labor Department cited $22 billion in labor fraud uncovered; and FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau made six Most Wanted Fraudster arrests worth over $2 billion in alleged fraud in three months. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, HUD Secretary Scott Turner, VA Secretary Doug Collins, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler, and the governors of North Dakota, Indiana, and Ohio were among those signing on.
