As Biodiversity COP17 Opens, South Africa Puts Implementation First With New 2026–2035 National Strategy

The 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) opened on October 19. South Africa's Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Narend Singh, said ahead of the meeting that his country was heading to COP17 with practical implementation as its goal, rather than only reporting progress.

Countries face a 2030 deadline to meet the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted at COP15 in 2022 to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Singh said COP17 must equip countries to act, matching global ambition with finance, technology and capacity, and that money announced on paper must become resources developing countries can actually access and use.

He said South Africa would finalise its revised National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for 2026 to 2035 to guide implementation of the framework, and would press for equitable sharing of benefits derived from the country's genetic resources.
