Peru Installs High-Level Multisector Commission to Tackle Violent Crime

Monday, October 19, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Peru's government formally installed the High-Level Multisector Commission for Recovering Security and Public Order on October 18, created under Supreme Decree No. 141-2026-PCM and placed under the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM). Prime Minister Luis Galarreta and the ministers of Interior, Defence, Justice and Foreign Relations held their first meeting at Army headquarters in San Borja, which will serve as the commission's operations and coordination centre.

The commission is charged with removing normative, bureaucratic, budgetary and management obstacles, and can summon public and private actors to build a unified strategy and support the Comando Unificado and the National Police. Ministers unanimously backed the PCM's proposal for a technical secretary, to be named in the coming days.

Violent crime and extortion have risen steadily in Peru and security has become central to the country's political debate. Commentators welcomed the focus on insecurity while warning that a new coordinating body risks overlapping with existing institutions such as Conasec, and that measurable impact will require clear police deployments, investigative staffing and judicial coordination.
