Thailand Seeks $200 Million World Bank Loan for Solar and Energy-Efficiency Upgrades

Thailand is seeking a $200 million loan from the World Bank to fund solar power installations and energy-efficiency upgrades in public buildings and industrial areas, as part of clean energy investment plans announced on October 18.
The proposal follows talks at the 2026 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings, where Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas discussed low-carbon cities and energy security with World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. Under the financing structure, the World Bank loan would be channelled through the Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM BANK) and secured by a guarantee from Thailand's Finance Ministry.
The project's initial focus will be Bangkok and surrounding industrial estates, including rooftop solar panels and electrical system upgrades at schools and other public institutions, as Thailand advances its broader clean energy investment and energy security agenda.
