Alabama Awards $167 Million Contract to Replace Tuscaloosa's Woolsey Finnell Bridge With a Six-Lane Span

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced that the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has awarded a $167 million contract to Scott Bridge Company — the lowest of three bidders, in an award made on October 14 — to replace Tuscaloosa's Woolsey Finnell Bridge and improve US-82 (McFarland Boulevard).
The project will replace the aging four-lane bridge over the Black Warrior River with a modern six-lane span including a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists, replace the Campus Drive bridge, and widen McFarland Boulevard. The roughly 1.5-mile project runs from near Rice Mine Road to the University Boulevard interchange, on a corridor carrying about 50,000 vehicles a day.
Funding includes a $100 million federal earmark secured by former Senator Richard Shelby in the 2023 omnibus spending bill. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 and take up to four years, with two lanes of traffic maintained in each direction on US-82 throughout.
