New York's Chinatown Marks Double Ten Day With Flag-Raising, Parade and Lion Dances

Monday, October 19, 2026 · Society · GSM News

Manhattan's Chinatown celebrated Double Ten Day on October 10 with flags, traditional music, drums and lion and dragon dances, according to OCAC News. The day included a flag-raising ceremony, flower offerings, a National Day rally and a parade through Chinatown, continuing a community tradition of more than a century.

The celebration centered on the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA). CCBA President Eric Ng recalled that Dr. Sun Yat-sen visited the association in 1911 to seek support from the overseas Chinese community, and said the annual celebration helps preserve that history. James Lee, director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, also attended and thanked the community for its longstanding support.

For U.S.-born Chinese-American teenagers, the day carried an additional meaning. Members of the FASCA youth program, including Hunter Chen and Caleb Lee, took part in the celebration and said that, as second-generation immigrants, Double Ten Day gave them a chance to experience their heritage firsthand and reflect on holding both Taiwanese and American identities.

New York Chinatown's Double Ten celebration dates to the early 20th century and remains one of the community's oldest annual festivals.
