Halloween Pet Safety Checklist: Candy, Decorations and a Busy Front Door

With Halloween approaching, households with pets face several common risks. Chocolate and sugar-free candy containing xylitol are toxic to dogs and cats and should be kept out of reach. Candles inside pumpkins and wired decorations can cause burns or be chewed, and batteries and glow sticks should also be stored away.
During trick-or-treating on Oct. 31, a frequently opening front door can let a startled pet slip out. Keeping pets in a quiet inner room during peak hours, with a collar and ID tag carrying current contact details, reduces the risk. Costumes should fit without blocking vision or breathing and be removed if the pet shows distress. Large street events that evening, such as the West Hollywood Carnaval, may be too crowded and noisy for most pets.
