Maryland Fires Defensive Coordinator Ted Monachino Amid Five-Game Skid
Maryland head coach Mike Locksley announced on Oct. 18 that defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Ted Monachino has been relieved of his duties. 'I appreciate Ted's hard work, and after evaluating the program, I felt this change was necessary,' Locksley said in a statement. Monachino was in his second season at Maryland.
A day earlier, Maryland lost 37-30 at home to Rutgers, its fifth straight defeat, dropping to 2-5. The Terrapins' defense ranks last in the Big Ten, allowing 33.3 points per game and 366.6 yards per game (14th in the league); during the five-game skid it has given up 43.8 points per game. Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim takes over as primary defensive coordinator, and inside linebackers coach Zach Spavital was elevated to co-defensive coordinator. Maryland is idle this week and hosts Illinois on Oct. 31. (GSM, via USA Today)
