Follow-Up: Alberta Referendum Count Complete — 77% Vote to Stay in Canada, Secession Process Rejected at 23%

Alberta voters have rejected a move toward independence, according to the Associated Press: with more than one million ballots counted, 77% voted to remain in Canada and 23% voted to begin a secession process, Elections Alberta's unofficial results showed. Official results are due October 29.
The vote was not a direct independence referendum — even a 'yes' would only have opened a legal process toward a future secession vote. More than 100 polling stations extended their hours after opening late, delaying the result.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said 'Albertans chose Canada' after the result. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith welcomed the outcome as building 'a stronger Alberta in a united Canada.' Alberta holds the world's fourth-largest proven oil reserves; AP framed the result as a win for Carney's national-unity agenda, against a backdrop of President Trump's trade war and '51st state' annexation remarks.
