Alabama's Four Specialty Public High Schools Open Admissions for 2027-28, Tuition-Free for All 67 Counties

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced in Montgomery on October 19 that all four of Alabama's specialty public high schools have opened their admissions portals for the 2027-28 academic year, and encouraged families across the state to explore and apply. The schools are state-funded and tuition-free, serve students from all 67 counties, and offer specialized academic programs and residential opportunities.
The four schools are the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham (grades 7-12); the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile, the state's only fully public residential high school, where tuition, room and board are free; the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering in Huntsville, which integrates cyber technology and engineering into all academic disciplines; and the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences in Demopolis, the state's first public residential high school dedicated to healthcare education, created to help address the state's healthcare workforce shortage.
Governor Ivey said Alabama's future is sitting in its classrooms today and that the four specialty schools offer another quality option for families in all 67 counties. She signed legislation establishing the cyber technology and engineering school in 2018 and the healthcare sciences school in 2024, and in April 2026 signed Senate Joint Resolution 84 encouraging greater collaboration and information sharing among the four institutions; school administrators held their first joint meeting in August. Families can visit the schools' websites to apply and arrange campus preview days and tours.
