Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a proclamation on October 19 naming Fort Smith the state's twenty-seventh "Capital for a Day," effective October 21, 2026. Under the program, the governor and senior state government officials will travel to the city to meet and work with their local counterparts, and Fort Smith will momentarily serve as Arkansas' seat of government.

Governor Sanders' "Capital for a Day" program highlights cities around Arkansas and brings senior state officials into town to meet with local officials; 26 cities have previously held the designation. The proclamation cites Fort Smith landmarks and institutions including the U.S. Marshals Museum, the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center, Fort Smith National Cemetery, the Spirit of the American Doughboy Monument, and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

Fort Smith, in Sebastian County in western Arkansas, sits on the Arkansas River across from Oklahoma. Senior officials from state agencies are scheduled to meet with city and county officials and community representatives in the city on October 21.
