ATP Year-End Picture Shifts: Injured Sinner Ends Season Still No. 1 as Djokovic Takes Basel Wildcard

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

The ATP rankings released on October 19 show Italy's Jannik Sinner still at world No. 1 with 10,950 points, even though injury has ended his season early. According to Italy's LaPresse news agency and other reports, the injury will keep Sinner out for the remainder of the season.

Sinner's hold on the top spot will be tested over the next two weeks: he will shed 500 points from last year's Vienna title next week and 1,000 points from his 2025 Paris Masters crown on November 2. Germany's Alexander Zverev, playing this week's ATP 500 event in Vienna, needs at least a semifinal run to be certain of taking over as world No. 1 on November 2.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic has fallen to No. 12 and out of the world's top 10. The 39-year-old has accepted a late wildcard into this week's ATP 500 Swiss Indoors in Basel, chasing points for the year-end ATP Finals in Turin. With the already-qualified Sinner absent, the Turin cut line effectively extends to ninth place in the Race; Australia's Alex de Minaur currently sits 10th in the live race and remains in contention. Italy's Flavio Cobolli matched his career-best ranking this week at No. 6.

This week's ATP calendar features 500-level events in Vienna and Basel plus a 250 in Brussels; next week's Paris Masters, the final Masters 1000 of the season, will settle the Turin field. Holger Rune, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Casper Ruud are among the players who have withdrawn from parts of the fall swing with injuries.
