San Francisco Bay Area: First Fall Rain Arrives This Week, With Light Showers Expected in San Francisco Wednesday Morning

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · California · GSM News

In California's San Francisco Bay Area, the first rain of the fall is arriving this week. The National Weather Service (NWS) said a cut-off low-pressure system is moving in from the Pacific and stalling over the Bay Area: showers reach the Central Coast first on Tuesday, then move north into the Bay Area, with rain lasting at least through Thursday morning and cooler temperatures. Meteorologist Matt Mehle said most of the Bay Area can expect about 0.05 to 0.15 inch of rain, with up to 0.25 inch in the Santa Cruz Mountains and parts of the East Bay, and San Francisco residents may wake to light rain on Wednesday; he noted it is the region's first rain in months. Farther south, the Central Coast could see up to 0.75 inch, with a low chance of thunderstorms. The Weather Service also warned that heavy rain could bring flash flooding and debris flows over wildfire burn scars near Big Sur, and residents downslope of burn areas should monitor official forecasts.
