The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky announced that Roberto Castillo-Leal, 43, was sentenced in London, Kentucky, on Monday, October 19, 2026, to 36 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Robert E. Wier for making a false representation regarding United States citizenship and aggravated identity theft.

According to his plea agreement, on February 26, 2026, in Laurel County, Kentucky, Castillo-Leal presented a birth certificate, a U.S. passport, a Social Security card and a Georgia state driver's license, all bearing the identifying information of an actual United States citizen, to support a claim of U.S. citizenship. The documents contained the real citizen's Social Security number and birth date but Castillo-Leal's photograph. He maintained and presented the documents in an attempt to prevent his removal from the United States by the Department of Homeland Security.

U.S. Attorney Jason Parman and Dennis Fetting, Acting Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations, jointly announced the sentence.
