Former Vermont House Speaker Mitzi Johnson Named Director of Lake Champlain Basin Program

Former Vermont House Speaker Mitzi Johnson has been named director of the Lake Champlain Basin Program. The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC), which oversees the Basin Program's personnel, contracts, grants, and budget, announced on October 19 that Johnson will serve as director of its Lake Champlain Programs Division and director of the Lake Champlain Basin Program, effective October 13.
Johnson served 18 years in the Vermont House, including four years as speaker. The commission cited her strong background in water quality policy and her extensive experience consulting with nonprofit and other groups. She replaces Eric Howe.
Lake Champlain spans Vermont, New York, and Canada's Quebec province, and the Lake Champlain Basin Program is an important cross-border mechanism for water protection, coordinating federal, state, and local governments and environmental organizations across the basin. (GSM, based on WAMC)
