Chicago: 19 Northwest Side Businesses Hit in Smash-and-Grab Burglaries, Police Seek Tips

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · City · GSM News

Chicago — In Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, Chicago police said on October 20 that at least 19 businesses on the Northwest Side were targeted in a string of smash-and-grab burglaries last week, across the Chicago Police Department's 14th, 16th and 17th districts, in neighborhoods including Forest Glen, Portage Park and Albany Park.

Police said a crew of three to four people used a brick to break through the front door or window of each business, entered and stole cash registers or merchandise, then fled in a red Kia. Restaurants, coffee shops and a hardware store were among the businesses hit. Security cameras at Bottles and Cans, at 6401 N. Central Avenue, captured clear images of the crew.

Owner Carly Katz said the latest break-in was the second time her business had been burglarized this year. Although Bottles and Cans sits at a busy, well-lit intersection, it was not spared; Katz said she felt fortunate the damage was not worse, and noted that owners now face repair and insurance costs and wider concerns about neighborhood safety. Police released surveillance images and asked anyone with information to contact investigators. No suspects were in custody and the investigation is ongoing. (GSM, based on FOX 32 Chicago)
