Miami Voters to Weigh $450 Million Public-Safety Facilities Bond in November Referendum

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · City · GSM News

Miami — In Miami, a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, Referendum 1 on the November ballot will ask voters to decide a $450 million public-safety facilities bond to renovate and replace police and fire facilities across the city, including a new public safety headquarters.

Mayor Eileen Higgins supports the bond. She says the police headquarters is overcrowded, with plumbing, flooding, restroom and electrical problems; many fire stations are old and lack room for emergency vehicles; and emergency response waits run 9 to 12 minutes in some underserved areas.

Commissioners Damian Pardo and Christine King oppose the measure, arguing the bond is borrowing that residents will repay through taxes. The referendum will be decided alongside the November election.
