WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a statement on October 20 reporting the sentencing in a case involving assaults on federal officers: Jennifer Susan Cruz was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for assaulting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, along with a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, in January.

According to the DHS statement, the incident occurred on January 13 during a joint immigration enforcement operation in Jacksonville involving ICE, CBP and the Florida Highway Patrol. During a traffic stop involving two people unlawfully present in the United States, Cruz, a U.S. citizen, got out of her car and punched a trooper in the face. As officers restrained and arrested her, she continued kicking, and after being placed in a law enforcement vehicle she kicked an ICE officer and a CBP officer and kicked the vehicle's ceiling.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida announced on October 14 that Senior U.S. District Judge Harvey E. Schlesinger sentenced Cruz, 41, of Jacksonville, to 15 months in prison. Court reporting on the case said she had pleaded guilty in June. In addition to the prison term, DHS said, Cruz was sentenced to two years of supervised release and ordered to pay $5,592 in restitution.
