Energy Department Announces About $967 Million in Grid Resilience Grants for States, Territories and Tribes

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced in Washington on October 20 that it will provide approximately $967 million in additional funding through its Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grant program to modernize critical energy infrastructure, lower electricity costs and strengthen America's power grid. The department's Grid Deployment Office news page listed the funding the same day, saying the additional funding will help states, territories and tribes modernize critical energy infrastructure, improve grid reliability and deliver more affordable electricity to American families and businesses.

The department said the funding will support locally driven projects across states, territories and tribes to upgrade critical infrastructure, prevent power disruptions and meet growing electricity demand while helping lower costs for American families and businesses. Projects funded through the program are intended to protect against disruptive events, improve system performance and ensure communities and businesses have dependable power when they need it most. States, tribes and U.S. territories can view their funding allocations and application instructions on the department's program page, the department said.

"Lowering costs and unleashing prosperity are top priorities for President Trump," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. "These commonsense investments provide resources directly to states, territories, and tribes to lower electricity costs and strengthen grid reliability for American businesses and families." Katie Jereza, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Electricity, said: "A strong and dependable grid is the backbone of American economic prosperity. This funding will help Americans across the country, including our tribal partners, optimize their electricity systems and prepare for future growth while strengthening energy security and deploying technologies that can lower the long-term cost of delivering reliable power."

According to the department's program page and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the formula grant program is designed to strengthen and modernize the electric grid against wildfires, severe storms and other natural disasters. It is administered by the Office of Electricity with NETL support under Section 40101(d) of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and distributes funding to states, territories and federally recognized tribes over five years based on a formula that includes population, land area, the probability and severity of disruptive events, and historical mitigation spending; recipients then award the funds to individual projects. NETL's program page says Amendment 10 of the fiscal 2025-2026 administrative and legal requirements document was issued on October 20, opening a 120-day application period for existing recipients and new applicants, with an application deadline of February 17, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
