Ohio Board of Education Secures $8.4 Million Federal Grant for ELEVATE Ohio Educator Initiative

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · Education · GSM News

The State Board of Education of Ohio announced in Columbus that it has secured an $8.4 million grant through the U.S. Department of Education's Teacher and School Leader (TSL) grant program for 2026. Dr. Philip H. Wagner, Superintendent of Public Instruction, made the announcement.

The grant will fund ELEVATE Ohio, a three-year initiative to enhance the state's educator workforce, focusing on Educator Leadership, Evaluation, Vision, Advancement, Talent and Excellence. The funds will support comprehensive, research-driven resources, evidence-based tools and systems to help K-12 districts and community schools address challenges in recruiting, retaining and supporting licensed educators. In the first year, a subset of Ohio districts and community schools will pilot the initiative with the State Board of Education, reaching an estimated 70,000 students statewide, and the resources will then be made available to all Ohio schools.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said the funding will encourage more of the state's best and brightest minds to enter the teaching profession and remain educators for a long time. Superintendent Wagner said the grant strengthens educator licensure pipelines and support, and Board President Paul LaRue said it will give districts and stakeholders tools to make informed hiring decisions that ultimately benefit Ohio students.
