Florida FLHSMV Data Breach: Notification Letters Mailed This Week, One Year of Free Credit Monitoring Offered

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) begins mailing notification letters this week to residents who may have been affected by a data breach.

In an official notice dated October 16, the department said a malicious actor accessed certain department records on September 4 using compromised credentials. The department took immediate steps to contain the activity and secure its systems, and the investigation is being conducted with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The information potentially affected includes driver license and motor vehicle data, including document images and other personal information. As of the notice, FLHSMV had no evidence that the information had been misused. The department has not announced a total number of affected records.

FLHSMV has partnered with Sontiq, Inc., a TransUnion company, to offer affected individuals one year of complimentary identity and credit monitoring services and $1 million in identity theft insurance. Because the department may not have current mailing addresses for people who no longer hold a valid Florida driver license or identification card, or who previously titled a vehicle in Florida, it also issued a substitute notice under state law and advised those residents to email [email protected] to check whether they were affected. The department recommends reviewing account statements and credit reports, watching for suspicious activity, and considering a fraud alert or security freeze with the credit bureaus.
