In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, family, friends, colleagues, and law enforcement officers from across the country gathered on October 19 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center for the funeral service of Minnehaha County Deputy Katherine Frank.

Frank, 26, was shot on October 9 in Sioux Falls while responding to a mental health-related call for service and died on October 12. She is the first Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office deputy to die in the line of duty in a century. The service began at 1 p.m., following an 11:30 a.m. procession from the George Boom Funeral Home, with members of the public lining the route.

South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden, U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds, Attorney General Marty Jackley, U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and Sioux Falls Mayor Christine Erickson were among those in attendance. Visiting agencies included the West Fargo police and fire departments, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Sioux City, Iowa, police department, with many officers wearing black ribbons in mourning. During the service, law enforcement members placed white carnations atop her casket one by one, symbolic of a good life. Sheriff-elect Josh Phillips said: "We've never experienced a loss like this, but our healing is just beginning, and we need to look out for each other."

GSM reported Frank's death on October 13, when funeral arrangements had not yet been announced. A visitation was scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 20 at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson, Minnesota, Frank's hometown, followed by a private family interment.
