New York — U.S. stocks closed mixed on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 529.85 points, or 1.02%, to 52,495.88, the S&P 500 gained 21.84 points, or 0.28%, to 7,712.57, and the Nasdaq Composite edged down 6.07 points, or 0.02%, to 26,424.82, according to closing data reported by The Wall Street Journal. The small-cap Russell 2000 rose 1.65% to 2,773.42 — its biggest rise since August 4, according to Reuters' daily market wrap — while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slipped 0.29% to 11,283.81. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) fell 6.13% to 17.31.

Nine of the S&P 500's eleven sectors rose: health care gained about 2.3% to lead and hit a record high, real estate rose about 1.7%, technology fell about 0.3% and communication services fell 0.9%. Among individual names, 3M rose more than 5% after raising its full-year profit forecast, Equifax jumped about 11% after earnings and Hasbro gained about 5.6%, while General Motors fell about 7% among the index's biggest decliners and GE Aerospace dropped about 5% despite a profit beat. Most megacap technology stocks lagged: Meta fell 1.63% to $693.94, its fifth straight down session, while Tesla rose about 1.5%. Netflix fell about 6% after the bell following its earnings report, according to Reuters.

Stocks had opened lower before reversing after reports that mediators had proposed reviving U.S.-Iran talks, The Wall Street Journal reported. TradingKey reported that early in the U.S. session, media reports said the United States had approved a proposal submitted by Pakistan's army chief to senior Iranian officials and that Iran had preliminarily agreed, but a diplomat involved in the negotiations said reports of an imminent agreement were inaccurate and that talks were still ongoing. In energy markets, Brent and WTI crude futures both touched roughly five-month highs intraday before closing lower, with Brent falling back below $109 a barrel and WTI finishing near $101. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to about 5.12%. (GSM, based on Reuters and Wall Street Journal closing data)
