Oklahoma Medicaid Payment Error Rate Is Just 0.15%, Far Below the 6.12% National Average

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma's Medicaid payment error rate was 0.15% in 2025, far below the national average of 6.12%, according to figures released by the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA), which administers the program known as SoonerCare.
The state's Children's Health Insurance Program also posted a low improper payment rate of 0.88%, compared with a national average of 7.05%, according to the agency's news release. The two programs' payment error rates are evaluated every three years, and Oklahoma was among the states with the lowest rates in both the 2022 and 2025 reviews; in 2022 its Medicaid error rate was 1.95%, the second lowest in the nation.
Aaron Morris, interim CEO of the Health Care Authority, said in a statement that Oklahomans expect every taxpayer dollar to be spent the right way and that the agency is continuously enhancing its tools to preserve Medicaid dollars for residents in need. The agency said its program-integrity plan combines strict provider credentialing and revalidations of high-risk providers with targeted post-payment audits, firewalls, automated application screenings, and data validation. Attorney General Gentner Drummond in April requested an audit of how OHCA oversees managed care organizations.
