Cardinal Gregory to Join Loyola University New Orleans Conversation on November 5: Faith, Hope and Charity
Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington and the first African American cardinal in the Catholic Church, will take part in a special campus conversation at Loyola University New Orleans on Thursday, November 5, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., the university announced on October 20 via GlobeNewswire. The event, titled 'Conversation with the Cardinal,' will be held in the St. Charles Room of the Danna Student Center. It is free and open to the public, with RSVPs taken through the university's event page, and is presented by the Canizaro Center for Catholic Studies in recognition of Black Catholic History Month.
University President Xavier A. Cole will interview Cardinal Gregory about faith, hope and charity. Both men are converts to the Catholic faith, and the discussion will explore their personal journeys to Catholicism and how those experiences have shaped their lives, vocations and approaches to leadership. President Cole said Cardinal Gregory's historic leadership and witness have had a profound impact on the Catholic Church in the United States, and that students and the New Orleans community will have the opportunity to hear from one of the most consequential Black Catholic leaders of the time during Black Catholic History Month.
Pope Francis elevated Cardinal Gregory to the College of Cardinals in November 2020. His decades of leadership have included service as Archbishop of Washington, Archbishop of Atlanta and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, during whose tenure the bishops implemented the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Loyola University New Orleans is a Jesuit, Catholic university, and its Canizaro Center for Catholic Studies advances the Catholic intellectual tradition and Jesuit spirituality.
