Illinois Opens Special Enrollment: About 9,300 Who Lost Medicaid Can Enroll Through Year-End

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · States · GSM News

Get Covered Illinois, the state's official health insurance marketplace, has opened a special enrollment period running through December 31 for about 9,300 affected residents, offering a direct path to coverage with premium tax credits for those who qualify.

The group consists of lawfully present immigrants in Illinois who lost Medicaid coverage effective October 1 under the federal budget bill. Get Covered Illinois notes that this group will no longer be eligible for premium tax credits from January 1, 2027, making the special enrollment period a key window to secure subsidized coverage before the new rules take effect.

Residents can apply through the Get Covered Illinois website, where staff will help assess eligibility and match applicants with plans. Illinois is among the states hit hardest by the federal tightening of Medicaid eligibility, and state health officials urged affected families to enroll before year-end to avoid a gap in coverage.
