World Food Prize at 40: 2026 Borlaug Dialogue Opens in Des Moines

The 2026 Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue opened on October 20 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, marking the 40th anniversary of the World Food Prize. The three-day dialogue, themed 'Before Hunger Wins,' brings together more than 1,200 leaders from more than 65 countries — officials, scientists, farmers and advocates — to discuss protecting global food security as conflict, climate shocks and economic pressures push more people into hunger.
'For 40 years, the World Food Prize has honored those who refused to accept hunger as inevitable,' said Mashal Husain, President of the World Food Prize Foundation, calling this year's dialogue a call to act with the same urgency. Foundation CEO Thomas Vilsack said leaders from every corner of the food system are gathering this week to find solutions that work.
Opening-day events include a keynote by actor Martin Sheen on finding the next Norman Borlaug, and a conversation with actor and author Nick Offerman alongside regenerative agriculture leaders Mary Berry, Professor Robert Montgomery and farmer-author James Rebanks on how farming can restore land and feed the world. The day closes with a Guinness World Records attempt: more than 1,000 volunteers, partnering with Meals from the Heartland, will try to package 600,000 hunger-relief meals in one hour. The week culminates in the presentation of the 2026 World Food Prize to Huub Lelieveld, honored for establishing global food safety standards.
