The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported in Boston on October 20 that local unemployment rates decreased in nine of the state's 12 labor market areas in September compared with August, and increased in two. Compared with September 2025, rates were down in seven areas and up in one.

All seven metropolitan areas for which job estimates are published lost jobs from the previous month on an unadjusted basis, with the largest percentage decreases in the Barnstable Town area in Barnstable County (-6.9 percent), the Pittsfield area in Berkshire County (-2.2 percent), and the Amherst Town-Northampton area (-1.8 percent). The state noted that unadjusted local figures reflect seasonal fluctuations. Over the year, six areas gained jobs, led by Barnstable Town (+2.0 percent), the Worcester area in Worcester County (+0.9 percent), and Pittsfield (+0.5 percent).

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted preliminary estimate showed Massachusetts added 3,500 jobs in September and 16,300 over the year. The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in September, equal to the revised August estimate and above the national rate of 4.2 percent. The next statewide release is scheduled for November 20, with local data following on November 24.
