Education Secretary Linda McMahon Addresses 1,200 Students, Parents and Educators in Salt Lake City: Kicks Off 'The Next 250: American Education' Series

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon on October 20 delivered a speech titled "The Next 250: K-12 Education" at American Preparatory Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah, before about 1,200 students, parents and educators. It was the first address in her four-part speaking series, "The Next 250: American Education," and the Department of Education released the full text the same day.

McMahon said the Trump administration is returning education authority to state and local leaders, investing in meaningful learning and proven academic interventions, and expanding education choice for millions of American students and families. American schooling, she said, was for generations the envy of the world, grounded in the fundamentals of reading, math and science, where children were truly known rather than merely enrolled and parents were active partners in their children's learning. "In every decision we make, we are not asking what's better for growing government power, ideological agendas, or bureaucrats' careers," she said. "We are returning education to its most basic obligation: to nurture the God-given potential of our children."

The Department said the series will go on to cover K-12 education, workforce education and higher education, highlighting the administration's accomplishments and laying out its vision for the next 250 years of American education. The Salt Lake City stop also opened McMahon's four-state tour.
