Michigan: Two Men Charged With Attempted Murder After Crashing Cars Into Detroit Metro Airport Terminals

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced felony charges on October 19 against two men who drove their cars into terminals at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) in Michigan in two separate incidents earlier this year, saying investigators have not uncovered a motive in either case.
Brian Sutton, 37, of Clinton Township, is charged in the January 23 crash, in which investigators say he drove a Mercedes through the front of the McNamara Terminal and into a Delta Air Lines ticket counter, injuring six people. Worthy said three women — two Delta employees and a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent — were struck by glass and debris but none suffered serious injuries. Sutton faces three counts each of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and assault with a dangerous weapon, plus one count of malicious destruction of a building. A judge previously ordered him to undergo a mental health examination.
David Chamlee, 67, of Southgate, faces seven counts, including two of assault with intent to murder, in the May 29 incident, in which airport police say he drove a black Cadillac SUV around the bollards outside the Evans Terminal and through the front door. Two women in that incident were struck by glass and debris and were not seriously injured.
Both men were arraigned on October 19, with bond set at $10,000 each and probable cause conferences scheduled for October 27. Each faces up to life in prison if convicted. The January crash prompted the airport to install concrete bollards outside the terminal, and the Wayne County Airport Authority says final designs for further security improvements are under review.
