NASA Moon Base October Update: VIPER Rover Heads to the Lunar South Pole in 2027, Crewed Terrain Vehicles Due by End of 2027

NASA on October 20 released the October installment of its Moon Base update series, a video and briefing focused on the robotic rovers and crewed lunar terrain vehicles (LTVs) being developed for the lunar South Pole region. During the early phases of Moon Base development, the agency said, these vehicles will run technology demonstrations, transport astronauts, map terrain, conduct scientific investigations and prospect for resources, with data from the early missions informing future mobility systems and the infrastructure needed to live and work on the Moon.

"Lunar rovers are central to our surface mobility strategy," said Robert Pickle, director of the Surface Mobility Office within NASA's Moon Base Program. "Their performance will lay the groundwork for the mobility systems that will define the next era of exploration and ultimately determine how effectively we can build, operate, and expand the infrastructure required for long-duration exploration."

NASA's VIPER rover (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover) will travel to the lunar South Pole region in 2027, venturing into permanently shadowed craters to look for water and other resources essential for sustainable exploration. Delivered to the surface by a Blue Moon Mark 1 lander, VIPER will travel more than 18 miles (30 kilometers), collecting data on the thermal, lighting and terrain environment that could show how water is distributed on the Moon and how lunar resources could support the Moon Base. Mission operations will be run from NASA's Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, where teams are simulating scenarios for the mission. The rover is now fully built and undergoing final testing at Johnson Space Center in Houston before traveling to Kennedy Space Center in Florida for launch.

For crewed mobility, NASA has awarded task orders to Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to build the first phase of lunar terrain vehicles, with Blue Origin tasked to deliver them to the lunar South Pole by 2028 through the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. The vehicles will first be operated remotely from Earth, traversing up to 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) a day to map the surface, and will gather data on operating in an environment where permanently shadowed regions can reach minus 334 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 203 Celsius). Artemis astronauts will later drive the LTVs to gather geology samples; the vehicles can support up to three moonwalks per mission, carry up to 176 pounds (80 kilograms) of samples and tools, and travel up to six miles (10 kilometers) on a single battery charge.

Astrolab's Crewed Lunar Vehicle 1, or CLV-1, adapted from its FLEX architecture, has been delivered as a mockup to Axiom Space, where astronauts in mock Artemis spacesuits evaluated its cabin and display interfaces; the company's first robotic rover, FLIP, will fly as a payload on Voyager Technologies' Griffin Mission One in late 2026 to test subsystems shared with CLV-1. Lunar Outpost has delivered a third static mockup of its Pegasus crewed LTV to Johnson Space Center for suited crew testing; its robotic MAPP rover operated at the lunar South Pole in 2025, and a second MAPP is scheduled to launch in early 2027. In the coming weeks, both companies will test wheels and tires at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Lunar Outpost is scheduled to complete its LTV preliminary design review in October, Astrolab by the end of December, and both are on schedule to deliver flight-ready hardware to NASA at the end of 2027.

NASA said Artemis astronauts will fly increasingly difficult missions near the lunar South Pole as the agency establishes an enduring human presence on the Moon and builds the foundation for the first crewed mission to Mars. GSM published NASA's six-month Moon Base progress update in September; this is the latest installment in the series.
